Memorial Quilt at Local Quilt Show

The Mahone Bay Quilters’ Guild biannual show and sale will be held September 28-30, 2018.

Quilt Show chair, Barb Himmelman, says “well over 100 quilts, in traditional, modern and art styles, have been entered in the show, including Laurie Swim’s magnificent “Hope and Survival,” the Halifax Explosion memorial quilt. Several new awards will be added this year, and it is always exciting to draw the winner of the raffle quilt on Sunday afternoon.”

Show hours are Friday, Sept 28 and Sat, Sept 29 from 10 AM to 5 PM, and 1 PM to 4 PM on Sunday, September 30. Admission is $5, with age 12 and under free.

Now at Trinity United Church and hall, the show will feature a silent auction, raffle quilt, and a designated boutique room selling items handcrafted by Guild members. Trinity United, one of Mahone Bay’s iconic three churches, is at 101 Edgewater St. This location offers wheelchair access, expanded parking areas and proximity to other Scarecrow Festival events throughout Mahone Bay.

While the term “quilt” often brings memories of the bed covers made by our grandmothers, today’s quilts have moved beyond the bed. They are now in art galleries or used as exquisite tabletop decoration. Even “wearables,” such as jackets or tote bags, are seen at current quilt shows. New construction methods and materials bring paint, digital printing, dyeing, thread painting and metallic embellishment into this area of fibre art.

The Mahone Bay Quilters’ Guild was founded in 1975 and has 140 members. The Guild makes and donates over 100 quilts each year to local charities. A Challenge Quilt auction at the show benefits Christmas Daddies. The Guild also decorates and staffs the Welcome Center during Mahone Bay’s Father Christmas festival.
