IWK Preemie Quilts Delivery

IWKPreemie Quilts

Many thanks to all the wonderful quilters from the MBQG and the Mayflower Quilters Guild who made and donated over 80 preemie quilts for the IWK NICU. Kate, Evan and Ben made the delivery, the nurses were ecstatic to have their quilt supply replenished. It is hard to believe but in the last 9 years we have made and donated close to 1,000 quilts!! For those of you who don't know I started this program 9 years ago after the premature birth (born at 26 weeks) of my twin grandsons, Ben (above) and Liam (sadly Liam died at 6 weeks of age). While spending many hours at the IWK, I noticed they had a small supply of quilts that were in use all the time. I inquired about them and asked who made them. The nurses said they didn't know but they would just appear sporadically, I quickly told them that I knew some quilters, we would keep them supplied and we have! I can't thank you enough. I know each and every quilt brings comfort and warmth to these tiny babies and their parents.

A few things to remember when making preemie quilts – they should be made of good quality 100% cotton (top, batting and backing included), they must be hand or machine quilted (not tied), they should be small – roughly 24"-36" square or a rectangle with no embellishments. You can bring your completed quilts into any meeting of the MBQG or the Mayflower Quilters Guild.

Thanks again, especially from the Robson/Inglis families.
