April 2014 Meeting

By 12 April 2014Meetings

It isn't often I miss a meeting but a cold I brought home with me from Calgary got the better of me. I hated to miss but no one needed this bug! Many thanks to Sandra A for taking over the check-in table for me and to Suzanne and Cathy for helping out with the pictures. I am well on the mend now, just in time for spring (I hope)!

We have a busy few weeks ahead of us with the Mahone Bay Founders Society dinner on Saturday night where we are going to be honoured for our community work. The we have our first "Sew In" day on the 15th, followed by our Extraordinary Quilter Dessert Party and workshops with Ana Buzzalino. All this before May!

I am looking forward to our first "Sew In" day. It will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of our newer members while we all work on various projects. We will have tables set up with risers to make it easier for anyone wanting to do some cutting or basting. If you have a question or problem with one of your projects, bring it along. there is bound to be someone ther who can help you.

Linda's quilt "We Are All African"

Linda Finley presented a very informative and interesting program on how she uses paints on her quilts. Linda is certainly a gifted quilter and artist, we are so lucky to have her as a member who is willing to share her wonderful unique quilts.

It was nice to see the first panel of the Mahone Bay School 100th Anniversary quilt project. Many members are participating in this project under the leadership of Anna Davison.

Apr'14-3

This wonderful quilt was a project Linnet Finley worked on at her daughter's pre-school. Linnet writes -
"Wynn's pre-school is called Jubilee Road Children's Centre. Their philosophy of teaching includes directing the curriculum to fit the specific interests the children are exhibiting at any given time. After reading a quilt focused story the class developed a bit of an obsession with quilts and quilting and all of the children brought in special quilts from home to share. The teachers asked me in to talk about quilting and I decided that making a quilt with the kids would be more fun. It was a special challenge to do this with 2 & 3 yr olds. I brought in piles of scraps and shapes with fusible backing and allowed each child to lay them out on pre cut squares. Then an adult supervised the ironing. The children all made multiple squares and then chose which one to contribute to the project. I sewed the top together and basted it then on another day brought it back in to tie. The kids chose buttons and coloured floss and did all the needle work for tying by themselves! I did have to assist with the actual knots but I was thoroughly impressed by their capabilities all round. It was a really fun project and I'm so happy that people were interested in it."
