May Meeting

By 11 May 2012Meetings

Well, spring has sprung in Mahone Bay and the quilters came out in droves for our May meeting. We were thrilled to welcome 6 new and nearly new members and several guests. We had a wonderful program with Sharon Macdonald, co-author of Old Nova Scotian Quilts

Sharon
Sharon spoke to us about the stories quilts tell, their histories and the research she has done on Red Cross quilts.

Andrea's quilt
A handwoven linen and wool quilt brought in by Andrea. This quilt was found in her Grandmother's house between the mattress and springs. A real gem!

Quite a few members brought in old quilts that either were family quilts or ones they found at auction or antique stores. There were some beauties.

As well we had a terrific show and tell, members were lined up to the back of the hall almost waiting to share their quilts and projects from Lynne Edwards workshops.

Linnet2

Linnet's quilt which will hang soon at Woozles, the children's bookstore in Halifax.

MolliesBag
Mollie made great use of her blocks from Lynne's workshop, using the cat on one side and the bird is on the other.

TinaFront

Tina's beautiful One Block Wonder quilt which inspired all those who will be taking the workshop at the end of the month.

We had a brief meeting, members were encouraged to come to St. James Church Hall on June 1 for a chowder lunch and to welcome visiting quilters from Quilt Canada. The Guild will have a showing of wallhangings and small quilts and as well there will be a fashion show of quilted garments. We are grateful to the Seaside Stitchers for organizing the entertainemnet. Our visitors will also enjoy some time to shop at local stores such as Suttles and seawinds, Encompassing Designs, Have a Yarn, Birdsall Worthington Pottery and Amos Pewter. We know they will have a wonderful afternoon.

SandraFascinator
Many of our members who are attending the lunch will be wearing the latest creation – A Quilter's Fascinator, thanks to Linda M. Watch here for pictures soon!

Plans are underway for our closing pot luck dinner and AGM to be held on Monday June 4. That is going to be a busy week with Quilt Canada in Halifax and all that involves.
