April Meeting with the Singing Quilter, Cathy Miller

By 5 April 2012Meetings

At our April meeting we welcomed Cathy Miller and her husband John to our Guild. Cathy is renowned in the quilt world (and beyond!) as the Singing Quilter. We were pleased to share this evening with visiting quilters from the Queens Quilters and the Mayflower Quilters Guild as well as friends of Cathy and John's who came to hear their performance. And what a wonderful performance it was! Not only is Cathy a gifted singer but she is a wonderful quilter and story teller.

We were all delighted to see her quilts and hear the stories of their connections with Cathy's songs.

Cathy shared with us her tiny hexagon quilts and one especially was quite remarkable. Instead of quilting it, Cathy secured the layers with a "Colonial Knot". I had never heard of this stitch so I looked for an explanation online and found a video here. There are many more, just google "Colonial Knot".

These are 1/4" silk hexagons!

Cathy also showed us her portion of the World's Biggest Hexagon Quilt, which has a unique setting. More on this gigantic quilt can be found here. After this quilt was shown it was cut up into over 100 quilts, Cathy was one of the lucky recipients!

Thanks Cathy and John for visiting us, do come back again soon! More pictures of Cathy's quilts can be found on our MBQG Flickr Photstream, link to the right. You can order her cds and find more information about Cathy can be found on her Singing Quilter website.

After Cathy's performance we had our Guild show and tell which didn't disappoint! Our members have been very productive this winter! Here are some of the quilts and the others can be found on the Flickr Photostream under "Sew and Tell".

There was much excitement to finally see Isabel's "Dear Jane" quilt. We had seen the top a while ago and now it has been beautifully machine quilted by Donna Hazelton.

Isabel made it using reproduction Civil War fabrics. Moe information about the Dear Jane quilt can be found here.

The Guild has a busy couple of months ahead of us with Lynne Edwards coming to be our "Extraordinary Quilter" at our Dessert Party, then she has 2 workshops. We are hosting visiting quilters who will be attending Quilt Canada in Halifax on June 1. As well we have other workshops coming up and our June Pot Luck Dinner and AGM on June 4 and then our Quilt Show at the end of September. Quilters do live busy lives!
