November 2014 Meeting and Workshops

AZ12

November just started and already we have had two workshops and a very full meeting! We were very lucky to have Anita Zobens, the Superior Thread rep for Canada and owner of Cotton Mill Threadworks, come to Nova Scotia and teach two workshops and present our November program. What a wealth of information! Everyone learned something and we got to play a lot with thread and needles. It is ok to throw old thread out, I think that spool of nylon invisible thread must have been well over 20 years old, it is gone. Now I need to go through the rest of my threads, many spools came from my Mom and my Mother-in-law. Time to get brutal and let them go!

The workshops were terrific. We had the "Open Thread Bar" and the "Applique Buffet" workshop. I learned a new way to applique and I can now adjust the tension on my machine perfectly. I used to fiddle with it but not really understand what I was doing, it was more luck than anything! We had such an array of different threads to try out. The silk was my favourite. Thanks Anita!

This is one big needle!

Linda MacD's first "art" quilt "Sky-Sea-Sand", she has a very lucky friend who will soon receive this quilt.

The show and tell at the meeting was wonderful as always. Many thanks to ll the members who keep producing beautiful quilts and come to the Guild to share their stories. We have two workshops coming up in late November with Sylvia Naylor. Our Christmas Pot Luck Dinner and Party comes up in a month, always a wonderful way to start the festive season.

This year the Guild will be participating in the Mahone Bay Father Christmas Festival with a display of our Christmas quilts and wallhangings at the "Welcome Centre" at 583 Main St. Come by and see us!

As always, be sure and click on our Flickr Photostream button to the right to see lots more pictures from our workshops and meetings.

So what is a thread bar and applique buffet? It sounds intriguing. I’m blog hopping thru Canada and stopping by to say hi.

    Hi Karen,
The “thread bar” and “applique buffet” were workshops offered by Anita Zobens from Cotton Mill Threadworks, she visited our Guild for workshops which were wonderful! The thread bar one enabled us to use many different tyes of threads in our machines and learn about tension and needles. We learned a lot. The applique buffet workshop was fun with lots of tips and tricks for machine applique and using many different threads. Aftrewards we could order threads from Anita.
